Sitting 60 metres high, Kuang Si Waterfall is arguably the most beautiful natural landscape in Laos. It is one of the most budget-friendly places you can visit in Laos and Southeast Asia. Read on to find out why Kuang Si Waterfall is so famous, the cost, things to do there, and the best time to visit Kuang Si Falls.
Why is Kuang Si Waterfall famous?
Kuang Si Falls is a well-known, easily accessible place in Laos for budget travel. It is less than one hour away from Luang Prabang, the former capital of Laos. The falls consist of bright blue, turquoise waters that begin in shallow pools atop a steep hillside. There are stairs nearby that lead to a lookout point, which offers stunning panoramic views of the Laotian countryside.

The falls flow down into calm, shallow pools you can swim in, with rope swings, overhanging tree limbs, and rocks you can use as jumping points into the pools. Before jumping, just make sure to double-check the water depth to avoid injury, and see which pools you can jump into and swim in. Most pools are open for swimming, but a few are closed due to them being seen as sacred sites. So just be sure to check for signage to avoid any issues.

What is the history behind Kuang Si Waterfall?
According to a local legend, there is an origin story behind the creation of the Kuang Si Falls. It began with a wise old man who started to dig a hole deep underground into the earth. As he dug deep, water sprung out, and it was so beautiful in colour that it captured the attention of a golden deer. This golden deer made its home under the large rock formation. The sound from the cascading falls hitting the rock was said to be so acoustically stunning that it drew people in as far as China. Sadly, there was a 2001 earthquake that removed this rock.
So the words ‘Kuang Si’ are reflected in the local language, with ‘Kuang’ meaning ‘deer’ and ‘Si’ meaning to ‘dig’ to reflect this origin story.
